Purpose:
The IT Manager - Mill Operations for the North America Sylvamo region serves as the primary liaison between the Mills and the Information Technology organization. This role is part of the Global Business IT organization that supports the North American Sylvamo business. The role exists to manage all Information Technology day to day operational support at 2 Paper mills and one sheet converting plant (Ticonderoga, Eastover and the Sumter converting plant), to manage service level management and improvement services, support and drive local, regional and enterprise requested Manufacturing initiatives, and strategically identify opportunities to leverage technology to drive new business value for the business. The role also supports the business product performance teams (Customer Technical Services, Manager of Technical Services) and facility based technology, EHS, Reliability, and Manufacturing operations business leaders. Through coordination of technical, diverse, and remote IT professionals, will work with members of the IT organization, Business and manufacturing site leadership, Application owners, Vendors, and production floor employees to deliver IT solutions which meet their needs.


Specific duties of this role include:

  • Managing the business relationship with the VP of Manufacturing for the North American business and region. Manages a team of 9 employees dedicated to the facilities in scope for the North American regional papers business. The team includes two Mill IT managers, two Mill Application Services, four Mill Technical Services employees. The two Mill IT Managers will report to this position, while all other resources will report to the Mill IT Managers.
  • Is accountable to ensure the success of a large and complex portfolio of initiatives that are business critical in nature managed by multiple project managers, internal and external remote resources and significant manufacturing and technical expertise. Each of these areas and initiatives include:
  • Scheduling of remote highly technical resources.
  • Support of end users as well as critical manufacturing and production corporate workstations, servers, printers, RF devices, Access Points, Wi-Fi and network infrastructure devices.
  • Support of important production based Business and Site Specific applications.
  • Directing and managing the cost, scope, risk, and issues associated with project delivery.
  • Effective communication to stakeholders (ie. Executive, Business, Site, and Project leadership).
  • Directs the management of application and mill IT teams across the facilities, region and business.
  • Establishes the vision, mission and strategic plan for delivery of enablement and support service to facility based technology, EHS, Reliability, and Manufacturing operations business leaders.
  • Directs the effective use of IT Solutions & Services resources:
  • Directs application support strategies and processes
  • Provides support of major company initiatives in meeting their project deliverables
  • Consults, analyzes and evaluates technical, process and application enhancement and project opportunities
  • Provides leadership to and manages the development and implementation of solutions through collaboration across multiple functional and development teams internal and external to this organization
  • Directs the strategic use of external resources.
  • Leads and is accountable for the career growth and development of a highly skilled and motivated team of IT professionals with specialized expertise in manufacturing, process control, EHS, Reliability and Technology business and related systems.
  • Directs the support mill outages, capital plans and major strategic capital investments with IT enablement.
  • Developing/enforcing practical standards and consistent processes, including the alignment of IT objectives to manufacturing objectives.
  • Understand business/Manufacturing/EHS/Reliability and Technology strategies and priorities to develop associated and supportive IT strategy, project and initiative recommendations and executable plans.
  • Directs the management of the provisioning of IT services and support by internal and/or external providers for the North America Papers mills.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Work with the following to enable business strategies and goals:
  • Regional business leaders for Manufacturing/Reliability/EHS/Technology
  • Direct Reports and Mill Leadership Teams
  • Information Technology – Various Directors, Sr. managers & managers throughout the business related functions and IT.
  • Provide leadership from an Information Technology standpoint for business and regional wide initiatives.
  • Coach & mentor management within their span of control to exceed the expectations of being a strategic and operational partner to the business/functional and mill senior lead team and the multiple operating lead teams for their function/facility.
  • Ability to understand future (Manufacturing/Reliability/EHS/Technology) strategy and direction and anticipate and define the supporting IT strategy and plan to enable the business and facility to achieve their strategic intent.
  • Develop a deep working knowledge of the business’ key strategic issues and objectives to properly identify possible IT implications and opportunities.
  • Identify gaps/inefficiencies in manufacturing processes and applications, and work with the appropriate IT teams to fill those gaps.
  • Develop a working knowledge of IP’s supply chain Operating Model (i.e., process implications and enablement requirements) and the Sustain Organization.
  • Leverage the IT Operating Model through collaboration with other IT groups to ensure service level performance that is consistent with operating goals and metrics.
  • Collaboration with other regional colleagues in Brazil and Europe to ensure we are leveraging the best standardized solution to solve business needs, and to be the team to help integrate key enterprise solutions into the mill environment.
  • Direct the coordination of the delivery of all information technology services in the areas of (Manufacturing/Reliability/EHS/Technology) by building and developing relationships and partnerships with all internal and external service providers. Must acquire a solid understanding of the network of service providers and also build strong working relationships with these providers.
  • Accountable for the effective prioritization of goals and objectives and related allocation of resources to successfully achieve those goals.
  • Develop a high performing organization by measuring performance through appropriate metrics, and continuously improving service. Proactively coach and mentor managers to grow leadership talent.

Minimum Qualifications/requirements:

  • BA/BS degree in information technology, business or other related field.
  • 10+ years of experience.
  • 5+ years of IT leadership experience.
  • Expertise in Manufacturing Mills; Management role in manufacturing desired.
  • Experience in effectively managing via influence.
  • Working experience in program management and managing multiple project managers.
  • Working experience in business analysis & relationship management and management of IT teams.
  • Experience and knowledge of business strategies & operations, the manufactured product and the larger product network operations (converting, off site operations, customers).
